The global coronavirus has brought uncertainty and anxiety into people’s lives, workplaces, and neighborhoods, particularly for those who work to improve the health of our communities.
During this difficult time, many organizations across New York State are working tirelessly to keep people safe, especially the most vulnerable. In response, NYHealth is supporting statewide and local efforts to address emerging health care and public health needs in the wake of the pandemic. In 2020, NYHealth awarded the Fund for the City of New York’s Center for Court Innovation a grant to expand its COVID-19 programming to public housing residents in East Harlem.
Under this grant, the Center for Court Innovation expanded its current COVID-19 response programming in Brownsville into East Harlem. The Center worked with tenant associations and other community organizations to purchase and deliver resources such as prepared and shelf-stable food, cleaning supplies, and protective gear like masks and gloves to public housing residents. It also provided stipends and mobilized residents for outreach, packing, and delivery operations. Additionally, the Center distributed devices to residents so they can connect online with case managers, health and social service providers, and virtual employment opportunities.
