On January 19, 2023, NYHealth hosted a webinar discussion on best practices and lessons learned from its Building Healthy Communities initiative.

In 2015, NYHealth launched its Building Healthy Communities priority area, a place-based initiative focused on improving access to healthy, affordable foods and safe places for physical activity in six diverse neighborhoods throughout New York State. Over a 6-year period, NYHealth invested more than $20 million and leveraged an additional $181 million in overall funding for this initiative.

NYHealth recently published two reports assessing the impact and outcomes of Building Healthy Communities—one evaluates the impact of NYHealth’s investment on the communities themselves, and the other assesses the initiative’s design and implementation to inform place-based research and philanthropy.

Panelists shared best practices and lessons learned for effective strategies to promote community engagement, healthy eating, and active living. Speakers were:

  • Brian Archie, Create A Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative
  • Phil Bors, Healthy Places By Design
  • Beth Weitzman, New York University School of Medicine (beth.weitzman@nyu.edu)
  • Carolyn Berry, New York University School of Medicine
