Throughout the pandemic, New York’s essential workers—such as those in social services, health care, deliveries and warehouses, grocery stores, and public transit—have been on the front lines, working tirelessly to keep New Yorkers safe and healthy. These workers have been providing services to and caring for New York’s most vulnerable communities, while often managing uncertainty, illness, and grief in their personal and professional lives. Supporting and caring for these workers is vital.
Lisa Furst, Assistant Vice President, Center for Policy, Advocacy, and Education at Vibrant Emotional Health (lfurst@vibrant.org), and Tuhina De O’Connor, Executive Director at Physician Affiliate Group of New York (PAGNY) Health and Research Foundation, Inc. (deoconnort@pagny.org), spoke about the training, technical assistance, and peer support efforts needed for promoting self-care practices and implementing a framework for health care, behavioral health, and social service organizations to support the emotional wellbeing of their employees.

- Note: NYC Well and NYC Frontline Essential Workers Helpline are both New York City-specific programs. People who are in distress who are outside of New York City can contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK. They do not have to be thinking about suicide or in crisis to call—just feeling distressed and wanting to talk to someone is enough to call.
