A Conversation About the War on Immigrants: Detained and Denied

Nearly 440,000 immigrants have been detained in immigration detention facilities in the United States. A record number of migrant children—almost 15,000 now—have been detained for nearly a year, and the trauma of the experience—toxic stress, depression, sexual abuse—will affect them for the rest of their lives.

In October 2018, inspectors from the Department of Homeland Security visited a California immigration jail and uncovered major violations of federal detention standards, including detainees losing teeth from lack of dental care and a disabled inmate left alone in a wheelchair for nine days. In the New York City area, detention facilities have also been found to have life-threatening deficiencies in medical care, with detainees being denied insulin shots, blood pressure medication, or pregnancy care.
