NYHealth Invites You to Attend:
A Screening and Director’s Talk with Dr. Thomas LaVeist: Something About Brownsville
In April 2015, a New York Times article highlighted Brownsville, Brooklyn, as the community with the lowest life expectancy in New York City. Media accounts of Brownsville are overwhelmingly negative—emphasizing crime, violence, and poor health. Such incessantly negative portrayals stifle social cohesion and further tear down the wellbeing of the neighborhood. It paints a helpless and hopeless situation where little can be done to reverse the circumstances. The other side of the story is that a cadre of individuals, community leaders, and organizations are working block-by-block to build upon community strengths in myriad ways.
Join NYHealth for a screening of “Something About Brownsville,” a chapter in a documentary film, The Skin You’re In, on the health disparities between black and white America. The Brownsville segment delves into a different side of the neighborhood that often isn’t covered: one of community, beauty, and joy. After the screening, there will be a discussion with the film’s producer, Dr. Thomas LaVeist, Dean of Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.
Please R.S.V.P. by August 30th. Light refreshments will be provided.
