New York City has long been a leader in school food, providing 1.1 million students with free meals that exceed federal nutrition standards. Recognizing that the meals schools serve should mirror the diversity of the students eating those meals, the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) and Mayor’s Office of Food Policy recently partnered with Wellness in the Schools (WITS) to launch the City’s first-ever Chefs Council.
Please join NYHealth for an in-person event with NYC DOE and WITS to learn how their Chefs Council develops culturally relevant recipes and how WITS provides hands-on, scratch training to school food staff. Speakers will discuss the advantages and challenges the nation’s largest school district faces when innovating, as well as the opportunities that exist to connect this work outside the City’s five boroughs.
Speakers:
- Bill Telepan, Executive Chef, Wellness in the Schools
- Laurielle Clark, Program Manager, Chefs in the Schools, Wellness in the Schools
- Lisa Davis, Coordinator of Kitchen Learning and Development, New York City Public Schools, Office of Food and Nutrition Services
Refreshments will be provided.
Please note, there will be a brief opportunity for networking and refreshments starting at 3 p.m. The discussion and livestream will begin at 3:30 p.m.
