The goal of this grant to the St. Lawrence County Health Initiative and the St. Lawrence County Public Health Department was to increase the number of small businesses that offer affordable health coverage and the number of residents enrolled in public and private insurance.

This project systematically identified uninsured residents at two points of contact—the health care system and worksites—and provided education and assistance to individuals who qualified for health coverage.

Outcomes and Lessons Learned

Developed a survey for the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce and individual Chambers of Commerce throughout the County to ascertain which businesses offered health insurance, the cost of offering coverage, and the number of employees who participated.
Developed an information packet on State-subsidized health insurance programs as well as private insurance plans offered through the Chamber of Commerce.
Sent the information packet to businesses identified through the survey as having uninsured/underinsured employees.
Conducted a telephone campaign to increase survey response rates.
Worked with the admissions and billing departments at five St. Lawrence County hospitals to establish a collaborative referral network.
