Through its Healthy Neighborhoods Fund initiative, NYHealth is supporting six communities across New York State to become healthier, more active places.

Although all the communities are working toward the common goal of improving the health of their residents, each community may face particular challenges. By offering responsive and time-sensitive technical assistance funding to grantees and their partners, NYHealth can help them meet their goals. In 2020, NYHealth awarded Health Research, Inc. (HRI) a grant to help convene a symposium on reducing food insecurity for stakeholders from across New York State.

Under this grant, HRI brought together government, clinical, and community stakeholders from across the State to share experiences, best practices, and lessons learned for reducing food insecurity. The symposium included a State agency panel on screening, referrals, and access to available nutritional resources for food-insecure New Yorkers. Health care providers and organizations that have successfully implemented screening and referral processes also shared their experiences and methods. Additionally, the symposium included presentations on food insecurity among veterans and evaluating processes to reduce food insecurity. Attendees learned about practical methods and programs to screen for food insecurity and how to refer clients to available nutrition resources.
