The global coronavirus has brought uncertainty and anxiety into people’s lives, workplaces, and neighborhoods, particularly for those who work to improve the health of our communities.

During this difficult time, many organizations across New York State are working tirelessly to keep people safe, especially the most vulnerable. In response, NYHealth is supporting statewide and local efforts to address emerging health care and public health needs in the wake of the pandemic. In 2020, NYHealth awarded Lenox Hill Neighborhood House a grant to provide free civil legal services to help older New Yorkers access and maintain benefits, health care and insurance, and emergency assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under this grant, Lenox Hill Neighborhood House transitioned to virtual and telephone operations for continued case management, outreach, and provision of civil legal services to existing and new clients. It helped individuals and families access and enroll in critical services, including secure housing, mental health services, health and food benefits, and social supports and programs. Additionally, Lenox Hill Neighborhood House facilitated remote preparation of medical advance directives and provided necessary in-person deliveries of meals, medications, and other supplies.
