While the demand for Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) and Planned Parenthood of Nassau County’s (PPNC) services grew, the economic downturn dramatically reduced investment income that both organizations relied on for annual operations. PPNYC and PPNC merged to realize greater efficiencies and ensure the long-term sustainability of their safety-net services.
As a result of the downturn, PPNYC and PPNC implemented cost-cutting measures, such as implementing hiring and salary freezes, reducing 401(K) contributions, eliminating positions, and increasing employee cost-sharing for health insurance. Despite these serious cost-saving initiatives, both organizations were running an operating deficit for 2009. With NYHealth support, the two organizations fully integrated services, including clinical services, financial systems, fundraising, human resources, and board governance.
