This Diabetes Care journal article from the American Diabetes Association analyzes the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and the risk of metabolic syndrome and Type 2 diabetes.

Regular consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages has been associated with weight gain and the risk of obesity, but their role in the development of chronic metabolic diseases had not been previously been reviewed.

The analysis found that in addition to weight gain, higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with development of metabolic syndrome and Type 2 diabetes and that intake of these beverages should be limited to reduce obesity-related risk of chronic metabolic diseases.
