Lack of access to fresh food is a persistent problem in communities throughout New York City. Numerous studies show that without access to affordable, nutritious food, obesity and other chronic diseases often result.

The Food Trust, a nonprofit organization, has worked to address the problem of inadequate food access in Pennsylvania. In May 2008, it published a report entitled “The Need for More Supermarkets in New York.” The report outlines the areas of New York City that have the highest need for supermarkets, and describes the relationship between diet-related diseases and lack of access to fresh food.
