September 10, 2019 – Today, the U.S. Census Bureau released state-by-state statistics on health insurance coverage in 2018. New York’s uninsured rate among the general population declined to 5.4% in 2018, from 5.7% in 2017; this translates to 72,000 New Yorkers gaining coverage.
The following is a statement from David Sandman, Ph.D., President and CEO of the New York State Health Foundation, on the newly-released health insurance data for New York State:
“New York State continues to be a leader when it comes to health insurance coverage. Even as the uninsured rate climbed nationally, more New Yorkers than ever before have the health insurance they need and the financial security that comes with it. With a strong commitment by the State to covering as many New Yorkers as possible, we are likely to see these gains be sustained.
Yet we need to remain vigilant. Federal efforts to limit Medicaid eligibility and enrollment and to claw back gains in coverage are escalating. The recently adopted public charge rule is already having a chilling effect on immigrants’ enrollment in Medicaid and other public programs and getting the care they need. New York must continue to develop creative solutions and safeguards to ensure that all New Yorkers have the health insurance they need and deserve.”
