An estimated 4.5 million New Yorkers have prediabetes—a condition that puts them at high risk for developing diabetes and its complications.
To help reverse the State’s diabetes epidemic, NYHealth is supporting a range of activities to help organizations across the State implement and expand the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP), a lifestyle intervention program that has been shown to help participants lose 5–7% of their body weight and reduce their risk of developing diabetes by 50%. Creating connections between organizations offering the NDPP and health care providers is key to reaching greater populations for enrollment in the program. NYHealth awarded American Diabetes Association (ADA) a grant to hold a diabetes and prediabetes summit for health care providers in Rochester to foster communication, outreach, and education about the NDPP.
Under this grant, ADA held a one-day summit on diabetes and prediabetes for at least 100 participants. Topics discussed included diagnosing prediabetes; identifying diabetes prevention and management programs in the greater Rochester region; and implementing screening strategies to promote early detection and prevention of prediabetes and diabetes. ADA targeted specialists, primary and family physicians, pharmacists, dietitians, nurses, certified diabetes educators, and health care professionals interested in diabetes. The summit was focused on educating providers, showcasing the NDPP, and increasing referrals into NDPP programs offered by NYHealth grantees.
