The global coronavirus has brought uncertainty and anxiety into people’s lives, workplaces, and neighborhoods, particularly for those who work to improve the health of our communities.
During this difficult time, many organizations across New York State are working tirelessly to keep people safe, especially the most vulnerable. In response, NYHealth is supporting statewide and local efforts to address emerging health care and public health needs in the wake of the pandemic. In 2020, NYHealth awarded Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital (Bassett Medical Center) a grant to rapidly expand statewide an existing peer support network that combats distress and burnout among clinicians.
Under this grant, Bassett Medical Center partnered with the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) and the American Nurses Association – New York (ANA-NY) to accelerate the expansion of its multi-institutional Central New York peer support network across New York State. By expanding its virtual peer support training, Bassett Medical Center increased the number of peer supporters for physicians within MSSNY and for nurses across the State through ANA-NY. Bassett Medical Center also developed Continuing Medical Education/Continuing Nursing Education sessions to address the stigma surrounding help-seeking.
