Expanding Health Care Coverage

January 1, 2012

This NYHealth-funded report by Health Care for All New York and the Community Service Society details the personal stories of families, small business entrepreneurs, senior citizens, and students across New York who have benefited from the Affordable Care Act.

Nearly two years after the new law took effect, millions of New Yorkers have experienced its benefits:

  • Young adults are now able to remain as dependents on their parents’ insurance plans until age 26.
  • Seniors with Medicare who have hit the Part D “donut hole” are getting help paying for their prescription drugs, and no longer have co-pays for certain preventive services.
  • Small businesses can now get some relief from employee health care costs with the help of new tax credits.
  • Uninsured people with medical conditions now have a new option for health insurance coverage, the Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan.
