This United Hospital Fund report provides an updated analysis of key findings and trends in New York State’s private health insurance markets and public health insurance programs.

This fifth installment in a series of yearly reports offers a comprehensive review of New York’s commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid insurance markets.

The report provides updated enrollment and financial data for calendar year 2012, highlighting changes from previous years. Among the key findings for New York:

  • Operating revenues for New York health plans grew from $48 billion in 2010 to $55.7 billion in 2012.
  • In 2012, 800,000 million individuals were covered by small group commercial plans.
  • Forty-nine percent of private sector employees were covered by self-insured plans in 2012, a 5% increase from 2010.
  • Combined operating revenue for PrePaid Health Services Plans rose from $8.24 billion in 2010 to $13.34 billion in 2012.
  • The overall net income for New York health plans was $1.7 billion in 2012, roughly a $200 million increase over 2010.
  • Medicaid managed care enrollment grew by 17% from 2010 to 2012.
